Dark Chocolate Peppermint Kombucha Recipe

Dark Chocolate Peppermint Kombucha with Candy Cane 2

Our dark chocolate peppermint kombucha recipe tastes too good to be true!  Dark chocolate peppermint kombucha is honestly so good, you could get away with substituting it for dessert! Its warmth and pepperminty goodness also make this a perfect holiday or winter kombucha flavor.

This simple recipe can be made with actual candy canes OR peppermint extract and sugar in their place.  Obviously the latter is the healthier option, but if you would like a way to use up the candy canes you have around from the holidays, they are an amazing addition to this kombucha.

Dark Chocolate Peppermint Kombucha Ingredients

In spite of all of the health benefits of kombucha, this recipe tastes like a liquefied candy bar!  It tastes so good that it’s hard to believe how good you feel after drinking it!  It is also a perfect drink for the holiday season—the dark chocolate combined with refreshing peppermint give this drink a warm and refreshing feel to it.

This one is also a great recipe to start new kombucha drinkers on.  It has so much flavor, it doesn’t carry as much of the typical tartness that can scare away new bucha drinkers.  I have yet to find someone who isn’t a fan of our dark chocolate pepperment kombucha!  On that note, it is also a perfect flavor to give away as a holiday gift (make note for next year!).

Dark Chocolate Peppermint Kombucha Glass

Size Matters

This recipe is written out for a single 16oz bottle.  If you are brewing kombucha by the gallon, you should end up with enough to make 6-7 16 oz bottles of this recipe.  We generally multiply the recipe by the number of bottles we plan on using, puree all of the ingredients at once, and split the puree evenly between the bottles afterwards.  Do whatever is easiest for you!

Primary Fermentation + Airtight Glass Bottles

FYI, this is a second fermentation kombucha recipe.  That means you need to have kombucha that has already completed the initial fermentation process on hand.  Both are truly very simple—waiting for your primary fermentation kombucha to work its own magic is the toughest part!  If you don’t know where to begin with brewing kombucha, no worries!  We offer a Kombucha Starter Kit with everything you need to brew your first batch!  It also comes with very straightforward instructions.

This recipe also requires airtight glass bottles.  These are a staple for home kombucha brewers.  I recommend getting 16 oz swing-top bottles; our recipes are written for them, they are a convenient size for drinking directly from the bottle, and they work well with kombucha overall!  You will want to have a funnel as well.  This makes all second fermentation recipes easier, and it is pretty essential for the cocoa powder and pulverized candy cane in this recipe!

I made this and sampled it today, right as I was bottling it for the 2nd fermentation. It’s pretty strong! I think I could cut the peppermint extract by 1/3 or maybe even 1/2, and maybe even reduce the chocolate powder a little. too.
In a few days, we’ll see if it has settled down a little. Otherwise, for a kombucha drink, it’s pretty different, as it’s like sipping a dessert. Not a drink where I’ll be chugging the whole bottle like I do when I add fruit! 🙂
